Marley

My name is Cheryl and I am writing to give you an update on a dog that we adopted. We adopted Tanner (now known as Marley Bear). Marley is a valued, loving, cherished member of our family. He is the sweetest dog, always smiling and wagging his tail. He was kinda afraid of our cats but now has become buddies with our one cat and they take turns chasing each other around the house. It’s pretty funny.

Marley always gives kisses and is friendly with everyone who comes through our door, family, friends and neighbors. He is also a good watchdog. Marley is also spoiled rotten. He loves pizza, goes for several walks a day, gets hugs and kisses EVERYDAY and gets lots of treats. He is extremely loved. He is a very happy-go-lucky dog.

I want to thank everyone who took care of him at the shelter. You have all made a difference during a difficult time in a dog’s life. Because of your caring and compassion (which is immeasurable) his spirit wasn’t broken. He is a sweet sweet boy. Marley has found a forever home, a forever family…. just so you know. Thank you for taking such good care of him until he came to live with us.

OtisIn October 2008, we went to the shelter just to look around. That is when we found Otis, our Pug/English Bulldog mix. It was love at first sight! Although he got transferred to the APL, the wonderful staff at the shelter helped us track him down so we could adopt him. Over a year later, he is fattened up and an absolute joy. His little sister, Coco, is his best friend. We are so lucky to have him in our lives! The picture is from when we took the dogs to a pumpkin patch and Otis decided to carry his little pumpkin around in his mouth! He wouldn’t let go the whole way home! Thank you so much for making our family complete. We can’t imagine life without our big boy snoring in bed next to us!

KonaThis is Kona! He was “Simon” in cage 11. We had been looking to adopt a male boxer since we lost our last boxer in June. He is such a wonderful dog!! What a sweetie. We are having a blast with him. Since he had been a stray, he was too thin and had whipworm. We have treated him for the worms and he has been getting a healthy diet supplemented with rice/scrambled egg or cottage cheese to put some weight on. He is looking so much better after just 3 wks.

He also came with a bag full of tricks that someone somewhere had taught him: “Speak”, “Rollover”, “Wait”, “Shake”, “Sit”, and I’m sure others that we haven’t discovered yet. We are in the process of crate training, but most of the time he just hangs out in his plush doggie bed all day while I work at home. I can’t wait till spring so I can introduce him to the parks near our home. Oh, and he has 4 kitty brothers and sisters that he gets along great with. We feel so lucky to have found him, and thank the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter for the wonderful care they gave him after taking him in!

We adopted a black female Shar-pei from you and she is doing very well. She is just a joy…a bucket of love. We also adopted a cinnamon Shar-pei and we have had him for about 6 years and he also is a joy, and just about the laziest boy I know, but they are the best watchdogs we ever had. They also both love the cats we have and sometimes take turns bathing them. They also all sleep together (cats too). Thanks for the great job you all do there and keep doing it.

Nija & Girffin

My husband and I went to your shelter looking for a second dog to adopt back in February 2009. We walked around the kennel for a while trying to choose a dog- there were so many! When we first saw Griffin (on the right of his best friend Nija) he actually smiled at us! As soon as we would turn away his smile would disappear. He was such a goofy dog! So we brought our other dog up to meet him and they played together in the meeting room. Griffin loved to play with the ball, but even when Nija ran up and stole it right out of his mouth he didn’t get mad- we knew they would be perfect together! He was such a skinny guy when we brought him home, but he loves food and quickly got up to a healthy weight. Now he and Nija are best friends and he even gets along with our two cats. He loves to sleep on the bed or couch with us, and when no one is home he is well behaved enough that we can let him have free reign of the house. He usually just lays on the couch and puts his head right on one of our pillows and sleeps! He also loves to play basketball with my husband, and he is actually really good at it! We are so greatful for everyone at the shelter and all they do to help the animals, and because of them Griffin found his forever home!

Jordan & PippenWe have an 11 year old dog (Jordan) who is pretty particular about other dogs. We decided to go to the shelter to see if we could find a dog she would like. We told the staff we were looking for a dog that was alright with an extreme alpha dog and they suggested “Jeffy” who was only described as “quiet and shy.” Of the 8 dogs Jordan met, Jeffy was the only dog at which Jordan didn’t growl. When we went to the meeting room, Jeffy would not interact with us, and kept peeing. But when Dog Warden Lena came in, he lit up and kept licking her. She explained the peeing was a submissive behavior to show us he wasn’t a threat and she speculated we would have a great dog in under a week. Something about him made me think this was going to work out beautifully for all of us.

I took him to the vet on the way home and our vet said we found the “one in a million dog” for which Jordan could get along, and that we had found a truly great dog. Within hours of coming home, he was a completely different (and perfectly house trained) dog. Since then, he’s gained 8 lbs (up from 24) and now has a super soft coat. He is such a wonderful part of our lives. He plays fetch for hours, will cuddle with Jordan and perfectly understands her boundaries. He loves doggie day care and is an excellent running partner. I can’t remember what it was like before he joined us! So what do you name a dog that is a star in his own right but is OK letting Jordan think she’s the only star? Pippen of course! (Jordan’s on the left, Pippen’s on the right and they are both looking for Chicago Bulls jerseys).

Bailey
Well, it’s been a couple of months since Bailey came to live with me and the rest of my furry family, and thought you would enjoy some pictures and an update.

They are all settling in together nicely. I took her to my vet straight away and there were no immediate issues. The loss of her leg looks like it was a vet amputation. She definately adapts to situations with it with ease.

She gets to go to the hangar with me everyday and has been quite good with everyone she meets (of course UPS and Fedex bring her treats). We have all been going on walks together and she likes to try and lead they way. She seems to not believe that she is in a home with a toy basket for dogs. There has been a little jostling, as one would expect, but they all are riding in the car together well as we head out for walks, lounge on the couch as I watch TV and all sleep on the bed with me.

She is still trying to decided why the cats won’t “play” , but they are not running and hiding as you can see from the picture.

She is doing well with house breaking and, knock on wood, no messes.

She is so very sweet and it is hard to believe she was on the streets.

Will let you know how things propress.

Regards,
Michele

Goose
Just wanted to send you an update on “Dakota.” He’s adapted wonderful; he has his own bed I went out and purchased, but during the daytime, he’s on the lazyboy. He has pretty much the run of the house; we TRIED to gate him in the kitchen the first day but when I got home he went over the gate; next time, he went under it. So, HE got his way and really hasn’t done any chewing on furniture, etc. Of course, all the shoes/slippers, etc. are put out of the way. He pretty much sleeps on “his” chair or looks out the window…

He DOES have a wild side though. When he gets going (called the “zummies”) he runs 500mph around the house and you can’t stop him. He likes to play rough and is biting me but I grab a toy and put that in his mouth. I was a chewtoy for my other baby and I’m not going to do the same. All in all, he’s been a good boy and is learning very quickly…

Here are some pics of the king on his throne.
