This is Annie, my husband adopted her for me as a surprise. She is the best thing that could have happened to us. When I am upset she just comes over and lays her head in my lap.

Both my husband and I adore her. My husband is overseas right now and I send him pictures of Annie every week.

Thank you

For 2 1/2 years my mom battled uterine cancer.  At the end of March, she lost that battle and I lost the person I was closest to in the world.  Although my story begins as a sad one, it doesn’t stay that way because 2 months later I adopted Buster from the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter.  The day I got him my family was getting together to celebrate my brother’s birthday.  It was our first family event without my mom and could have been very sad, but Buster put a smile on everyone’s face.  My brother even suggested his name.  Buster is my first dog and the best therapy for getting us through the grieving process.

Buster kept everyone entertained then, and he still does!  He gets his own toys out of his basket at playtime, and rolls over at the drop of a hat for you to rub his belly.  He tickles your toes with his licks and wraps his paws around your arm while you’re petting him.  He’s so affectionate there just doesn’t seem to be enough love for him.  He can’t replace my mom, but he has become my new best friend!

My dog, Curly is a toy fox terrier.  When I met him, he was a shaking, fearful, biting dog.  I don’t think he had ever lived in a house before.  Today, he has found his confidence as an integral part of the family.  He is lively, smart and loyal.  He gives me companionship, keeps me laughing, gives me exercise, keeps my feet warm in the winter, has chased off every littler critter plaguing my garden and never fails to put himself between me and any possible danger.  We have learned from each other.  He has learned to trust me and believe in his security with me.  I have learned to be patient and to periodically just stop and get a hug.  I am so very proud of him!

The dog I adopted from you, Burt, (you called him Scooter) has filled a void in my life. I was looking for a loyal, trusted enthusiastic companion/friend who would boost some of the routine. He is all that and more. He is a steady walking companion who keeps me company each day. He is full of fun and a loyal guard dog. He is very smart and I feel sometimes he understands so much of what I say that it is incredible. His hearing is so acute and his vision so sharp—he catches the tiniest noises and sights and can tune you into them — he tunes me into things that I might miss. He is very handsome and looks like he is wearing a tuxedo—black with white markings on his chest and paws. He is a dog that you can be proud of. He is in extremely fine athletic shape and very strong. He is an inspiration to be all that you can be. He is one of my best friends and is ready to accompany me with enthusiasm. I love taking care of him—giving him his dog food/treats and toys, playing with him, exercising him and stimulating his mind—and yes, even cleaning up after him in the yard and giving him a bath. Burt adds extra joy and vibrant life to the household. I call him Burt – because u r true.

Thank you for my very wonderful friend. Yes, he has a good home.

Adoptathon 2009 will be held from May 12-16. Each year, in conjunction with the Adoptathon, we hold a raffle of more than 20 fabulous gift baskets to benefit the shelter’s Best Friends’ Medical Relief Fund. The Best Friends’ Fund provides veterinary care for sick and injured dogs that arrive at our shelter so they too have a second chance at a happy life. Our goal for the raffle this year is to raise $15,000 so we’re going to need lots of help to get there!

This year the number of dogs whose lives depend upon the Best Friends’ Medical Relief Fund has never been greater–we’re seeing more and more heartworm positive dogs, dogs with broken bones, and other injuries. We’d like to help them all but in order to do so, we need you! Please consider making a tax-deductible donation for our gift basket raffle–gift certificates for local restaurants, shops, dog-themed items for pups and their human friends are among the items that are always popular. We would like to have all items by March 30 so that we can start advertising and selling raffle tickets in early April. All donors will be acknowledged in the Thank You section on our homepage.

If you’d like to help, please email volunteer Lynn Jewell at jewell.l@sbcglobal.net or adoption supervisor Greg Willey at gwilley@cuyahogacounty.us.  All the Cuyahoga dogs join us in saying thank you!
